One of the most important things you can do for your pet between grooming sessions is to regularly brush the coat to keep it free from tangles and matting. This is especially true for dogs with long or fine fur.
When you brush, start at the head and move back. Be sure to get down to the deepest layers. This is where matting can be the most difficult to break up. A slicker or pin brush is used to remove dead hair and debris. Use both brushes for dogs with heavy coats, starting with the slicker brush first.
For really bad matting, gently work on small areas at a time, taking frequent breaks. Make it a treat for the dog and give lots of praise. This will also help the animal become familiar with being handled.
When the matting is too severe, it usually ends up with the pet being shaved down to the skin. With proper maintenance, your pet will feel and look better until they are ready for their next groom.
When you stop by for your next grooming, ask about brushing suggestions for your particular breed of dog.
