Regular walking and exercise can keep your dogs nails worn down. In most cases, the nails will need a regular clipping. Use clippers designed for pets, and be sure to use the correct size for your dog's nails.

After clipping, the nail may leave a sharp edge and could cause scratches to people and furniture. A rotary tool finish will smooth off the nail and be safer for your family and household goods.

If there is a  dewclaw, this should be trimmed as well. If the dewclaw is allowed to grow, it could rub against the skin, causing painful irritation or infections. This is best done by a professional groomer.

In addition, you need to know where the blood line is in the nail to avoid bleeding. It is sometimes hard to tell where the blood line is and some bleeding can result whether you are a novice or a professional. Products like Kwick Stop can halt the flow of blood immediately. In a pinch, you can use cornstarch or bar soap.

At Lynn's Grooming Gallery, we are trained to properly trim your pets nails, and we also offer a rotary finish for a smooth paw. Be sure to ask the next time you visit.
